According to the Oxford dictionary, holistic means the belief that the parts of something are intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole. In other words, holistic is a word used to describe things that are linked together. In holistic treatments it is thought that areas of the body are linked and benefits can be made by treating the linked areas, in many cases this is the whole of the body, including the mind.
Although seen by many as an alternative to medical treatment, this is not factually correct. Holistic treatment is best seen as complementary to any medical treatment that the patient has. A doctor might treat someone for a physical problem, but not have time to help with associated issues, such as stress and anxiety. This is where many holistic treatments can be brought to great effect. Treatments such as rieki and massages have are very relaxing and help to reduce stress levels, this helps the patient to feel better about themselves and the world around them and assists treatments by keeping stress levels lower than they might be without holistic treatment.
